The Beyaz Birth Control Commercial Pisses Me Off

I absolutely hate this commercial.

Why do they suggest that women can’t:

1, Have a baby and get a degree?
2. Have a baby and have their choice of men?
2. Have a baby and go on a trip?
3. Have a baby and buy a house?
4. Have a baby and have it all?

Why does this commercial anger me so much? Every time I see it I want to throw something at the tv. I have no problem with women using birth control, but I just don’t like the way this one is being marketed. What I take from this commercial is this: having a baby keeps you from living life and achieving your goals.

Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think of the commercial. Do you agree with me, or do you think I’m way off base?

I think birth control is a personal decision and one person’s opinion about it should have no affect on another person’s decision, unless one of the two opinions is that of a minor. THEN, having a baby “might” affect that person’s ability to get a degree, depending upon the resources available to her.

I haven’t watched the video so I’m not sure about the statement on “choices of men” but I think it might refer to the number of men who would willingly and affectionately and lovingly raise a child that isn’t their own and the choices a woman might make if she isn’t shre the man she’s with is the type of man who can give her child(ren) the things she believes are necessary.

Finally, what a person sees as possible for themselves is dependent upon how they see themselves. If a person can’t see having a baby and buying a house or having a baby and going on a trip–well, for them it might be absolutely true. For another person, having two or three babies and having it all could be very possible and fulfilling. It’s nothing to be angry about. We’re a very diverse world! Some people do and some don’t (like, love, hate, be). I KNOW you believe in that. :-)

I personally despise all birth control ads, though I fully like birth control. I think the suggestion comes because our society portrays having a baby as a showstopper for those items. And while it doesn’t have to be, for many it certainly postpones it. Let’s face it, the reality is often that you do have to sacrifice something to have a baby. It is one of the very reasons I do not want children (among others).

Wow!! Do women view life like a store. A man here, a job here, a house here? That’s scary!! But she didn’t have to diss the stork like that. He was just doing his job.

    • http://wordyless.com Wordyless

To liken women to girls when discussing birth control is rather rude. I think this is one of the reasons I hate the commercial. They portray women as little girls in a store who are dreaming about the prince on the white horse (the ken doll game pieces) and the house with the white picket fence (the Barbie like dream house).

I hate that they equate having a baby to the end of your dreams. From my understanding, having children is difficult, but it’s not the end of the world. Women still get married, take trips, and have happy lives while raising their young ones.

If they were marketing to teens, maybe I’d feel differently about this ad, but as it stands, I don’t care for it one tiny bit.

(and yeah, she straight dissed the stork)

Do you know where one could buy those model doll houses from commercial.

PS- Yaz had so many side effect, that laughed when they just added one more ingredient and called it Beyaz..

I absolutely LOVE this commercial. It shows women taking control of their lives, and doing MORE than being baby machines. For those who think you can:

1, Have a baby and get a degree? You CAN’T if you’re missing class due to childcare issues, or off giving birth.

    2. Have a baby and have their choice of men? Because a good number of men don’t want to get with someone who has that kind of baggage, knowing they will be in the forefront of parenting and emotional issues of the child that isn’t really their’s, or even custody battles.

3 (3 comes after 2, not 2). Have a baby and go on a trip? Because it is outright irresponsible. Babies do NOT belong on planes, and they can’t even tell you’re on vacation, It’s like shipping your pet on vacation.

    4. Have a baby and buy a house? Because chances are, if you had the baby before the house, all the money is going to the baby.

    5. Have a baby and have it all? Because you CAN’T. Parenting inherently involves sacrifice.

Ilove it because it shows women wanting MORE than a child.

    • Melissamd2000

      Think_About_it do you have children?
I do and I just had my second child Feb 1st and guess what I will be graduating with my Master’s degree in June. Kids drive you harder to achieve goals because you want the best for your child. Also why would you buy a house before a child, if you have kids after that you won’t know how many room home to buy. As far as vacations, my husband and I took a vacation last year to Miami, FL. and we took our 18 month old. We had the best time of our life and enjoyed watching our son have a great time on the beach.
When you have children you don’t feel like those women do on the commercial, you accept the children and incorporate them into every aspect of life and you love doing that because you love your children.

    • ChangedWoman_416

Think_About_It, it seems like thats all you did was think about it, because its obvious that you don’t have children. It would be best not to claim what is impossible in a lifestyle that is not your own. You are entitled to your opinion but in mines your quite judgemental.

It’s funny that they suggest this amazing method of birth control will fail by including folate in it.

I totally agree with your point – I’ve thought the same. What I really want to say however is thank you. I searched for this commercial in a vague way b/c I wanted to take a picture of the girl with the bangs to my stylist.

So…something good came out of it?

    Thanks!

I just saw this commercial for the first time and I completely agree with you. I was absolutely livid by insinuation that having a baby apparently prohibits having a full and happy life. As a mother I’m completely offended by this commercial and as for the post from think_about_it viewing this commericial as an “eye opener”, no offense, is completely absurd. Of course having a baby makes things more difficult, but not impossible. It takes a lot of hard work, and maybe hard work isn’t somthing think_about_it is used to. Its laziness that prevents goals from being reached, not a baby. A woman without a child can still throw away her future and her life. Maybe you should think about that. You plan and save for a trip to take when your child gets older, you make arrangements ahead of time to finish your schooling, you save your money for that house, and if a guy wants a girl with a baby, that’s his choice but they aren’t unicorns sweetie, they do exist. Difficult, not impossible.

    • Think_About_It

You know what? It’s just a commercial showing women making OTHER choices than having a child. It’s a BIRTH CONTROL COMMERCIAL, do you really think they’re going to show someone welcoming the stork? The purpose of birth control is to prevent that!

I still stand by what I said. Mothers have to give up things when they have babies. Why are some women sooooo offended when anyone hints at the possibility of a woman choosing NOT to have kids??

One last thing: it’s a commercial. Un-bunch your panties.

      • Kathyobregon2010

Its really not the choice that offends, that’s what’s getting misunderstood. its free will, women can do what they want, I really don’t care. The offense is taken because its saying you can’t do ANYTHING with your life if you have a baby. That’s not true. I’ve seen it. There are many ways to show women they have a choice, my opinion, there’s a better way to convey that message than this commercial. You say you loved it, that’s your opinion, and I disagree with your reasons. I’m all for birthcontrol, I fully support women having a choice, and I hope more women can make the better choice to take control of their lives. But if it happens, its not the end of the world. And maybe we’ll have less mothers killing their infants, and less mothers on welfare if they knew that, yes those things are difficult to achieve, but not impossible, and they too can have a good life just like that girl who took the birthcontrol. Women who have babies still have choices, to think or assume otherwise is just showing the lack of progression in our society. If you wanna argue and fight for choice, it should be for everyone.

          Kathy,
You have hit the nail on the head. My reason for hating this commercial is the way the product is marketed and not the actual product itself. If a woman wants to use birth control, so be it. In my reply to Citizen Ojo, I basically stated that they make women look like wide-eyed little girls who will ruin their futures if they have a baby now.

For me, it is all about the MARKETING.

I competely agree. I found you post when doing a search on opinions concerning the commercial. Th frst time I saw it, it didn’t phase me. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time around I picked up on all these little “opinions” they had regarding life after children. You mean to tell me the same opportunities these women are shopping for are no longer available to someone once they’ve had a child? What a load of crock. The whole tone of the commercial was condescending.

Unfortunately in many cases, having an unplanned baby at an early age does totally alter one’s life path for the worse. And yes, sometimes someone can never recover from a financial hit like that. Teen parents start out at a HUGE disadvantage. Having children may not have affected you in a negative way but this is not the case for every woman. I believe the commercial was aimed at younger women. It really has nothing to do with higher income women who have families that would help them financially if they had an unplanned pregnancy at a young age. I also must disagree that a woman with a child can have her choice of any man. Most men do not want to date a mother. It’s called baggage and most people do not like the idea of step-parenting.

OMG! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I was actually looking up research to dispute this same fact and saw your comment. It reminds me of the movie Mona Lisa Smile which dealt with this same issue. I feel the way that you do, that a woman can have both and not either or. In fact if society encouraged both and taught young ladies at an early age how to think broader then most young teenage mother’s wouldn’t give up on themselves once they become pregnant. I am blessed to have a mother that still encouraged me to fulfil my goals even after I broke her heart by becoming pregnant at the age of 15. I went on to graduate valedictorian of my high school and became a Naval Nuclear Electrician for the United States Navy. I got out the military after giving birth to my 4th child. There could never be a greater achievement than being a good mother to my kids. That is my goal.

My son was an unplanned pregnancy yet I got my GED in 09 (not because of my son wrecking my high school life EITHER) and as soon as I got that started College and still in college and my son is 2! Its hard for an unplanned pregnancy but NO it does not wreck your life as long as you have the “balls” to buck up for something you “messed up” on. O and I am in the middle of buying a house with my fiancee, along with being a stay at home mom. The choices you decide to do effects your life and if you decide to have sex then buck up for the kid, shouldn’t be a “mistake” if you did the deed…

I just saw this commercial and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is offended. Since when is life as easy as “shopping around” anyway? My husband and I bought a house after we found out that I was pregnant, are we in the minority here? Pretty sure that almost everyone that owns a home, also has a child. Some of you are using the teen pregnancy argument as reasons for this commercial’s over the top message, but the women in the commercial definitely didn’t look like they were in high school. If that’s the point they were trying to make, they should’ve made it more obvious, because I don’t know a lot of teenagers making trips to Paris on a whim and buying a house.Guess I should cancel my plans for the future since I’m pregnant, right? Thanks for likening women who give life to no good baby making machines, Beyaz.

YES!!! Thank you for saying this!!!!!   Why has not every women who has seen this ad, also proclaimed how insulting, unrealistic and out of touch this thinking is.

Not only can’t woman have children AND other goals….
Did you notice, women browsed through having a man, a trip to Paris, or a house.
Where was the sucessful, career section of that store?  The corner office, high salary, CEO, section of the store?

The possibility of women ever having a sucessful career (with or without babies), is not even in stock.
